FPTT Program Elements

FPTT's portfolio offers a variety of programs and services; however, it focuses on four principal areas of activity:

  • networking and collaboration
  • professional development
  • research and advocacy
  • communications and promotion

Networking and Collaboration

Our connections to national and regional research organizations result in even broader support for federal laboratories and their technology transfer activities. FPTT maintains links to other federal and provincial departments and agencies, to universities, colleges and research hospitals, industry and professional associations and other players in the innovation system.

Together, these linkages enable FPTT to access critical technical and business expertise, as well as facilitate multi-stakeholder research and development.

Outside Canada, FPTT provides Canadian trade development officers and science counselors with information about the high quality and broad range of R&D in Canada's federal laboratories and acts as a single point of contact to government laboratories for domestic and foreign agencies seeking information and contacts in federal laboratories.

Professional Development

The FPTT has developed a strong vision of how it can foster the development of technology transfer skills in science-based departments and agencies (SBDAs). FPTT's seminars, conferences, workshops and bi-monthly meetings provide not only a forum for increasing knowledge, but also for it's transfer and networking.

Research and Advocacy

The quality of the regulatory regime has a profound influence on the rate and effectiveness of technology transfer. FPTT influences public policy by sharing the expertise, information and the perspective of its members with central agencies and senior government managers.

We ensure that decision-makers and opinion leaders have an informed perspective on technology transfer and federal laboratories. Beyond our studies and analysis of current and emerging trends and issues confronting technology transfer, we closely monitor relevant legislative and regulatory change in Canada and abroad.

Communications and Promotion

FPTT keeps the interests of members on the government's innovation agenda and promotes federal R & D, ensuring that the technologies developed in federal laboratories are seen as vital to Canada's prosperity.

FPTT provides members with opportunities to share knowledge and to work together. The FPTT News bulletin, available to members and non-members alike, is a source of professional news, events and information that has been selected for its relevance to the technology transfer community. Laboratory profiles and listings of business opportunities help to foster exchanges between laboratories and potential clients and make federal laboratories more accessible to the public at large.

The FPTT Annual Report highlights the networks accomplishments and is widely distributed throughout the innovation system. The FPTT awards and exhibit programs bring national and international attention to the successful technology transfer and commercialization activities taking place in federal laboratories.

The FPTT website is our main communications vehicle providing information on news, events, research, people and selected links to technology transfer related sites and individuals.
