S&T Objectives and Goals:

DFO's scientific activities focus on a vision to be a world leader in oceans and marine resource management. Their mission is to manage Canada's oceans and major waterways so that they are clean, safe, productive and accessible; to ensure sustainable use of resources; and to facilitate marine trade and commerce.

To achieve these objectives DFO has adopted a strategic framework focused on:

  • understanding the oceans;
  • fisheries management;
  • environmental management;
  • marine safety;
  • marine trade and ocean development; and
  • Canada's interests in international fisheries and oceans.

DFO provides high quality scientific information to the Government of Canada for developing policies, regulations, and legislation regarding the oceans and aquatic life, and to other government departments, the private sector, and the general public allowing them to meet their requirements.
