Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

Partner:

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC)

Key Mandate and Goals:

AAFC focuses on long-term research aimed at ensuring the safety and security of Canada's food supply. The R&D objectives are to: protect environmental health (e.g., crops for rotations, safety of soil); identify foreign pest threats (e.g., identify a new crop disease) and control domestic crop threats (e.g., breed resistance to a crop disease, safety of crops); and contribute to safety of food (e.g., reduce the threat from toxins, safety of food).

Key Technology Development and Transfer Mechanisms:

AAFC's primary mechanisms for technology development and transfer is through collaborative research and licences, for example:

  • In 1995, AAFC introduced the Matching Investment Initiative(MII) to increase collaborative research with the private sector. Under the MII, AAFC can match, up to dollar for dollar, industry contribution to collaborative research projects in the AAFC laboratories. Many projects are under way, e.g. Fredericton researchers are working with the Atlantic beef industry to look at optimal feed mixes of grass and legume silage.
