Legal Activities – includes providing legal opinions relating to all aspects of intellectual property (IP) including providing advices on the interpretation and appropriateness of IP terms in agreements such as procurement contracts, licenses, collaborative agreements. May also include providing counsel on litigation matters.
Policy Development and Evaluation - Legislation, Policies and Regulations - includes working with internal or external counsel, government departments and/or central agencies in developing, providing input or reviewing national, international and/or foreign legislations, treaties, policies, guidelines, processes etc. relating to technology transfer/intellectual property rights; providing advice and guidance on compliance with the various legislations, treaties, policies, guidelines, and processes to clients.
Strategic Planning/Strategic Direction –includes developing corporate S&T strategic plans, commercialization plans, and other departmental plans and strategies relating to technology transfer/IPR activities.
IP Management and Administration –includes general managing and administering of intellectual property protection such as patents, trade secrets, trademarks, copyright, payment of maintenance fees, monitoring license agreements, and managing the royalties derived from licenses.
Technology Evaluation –includes assessing the technical and market viability of technology opportunities. May also include evaluating, recommending and using evaluation tools, such as ProGrid, etc.
Market Research and Prospecting –includes undertaking competitive intelligence, competitive technology intelligence, strategic intelligence, roadmapping, technology tracking, as well as tracking a competitor’s activities to gain a competitive edge.
Marketing and Business Development –includes undertaking domestic and/or international marketing and business development activities, such as developing strategic relationships and collaborative partnerships.
Licensing and other Agreements –includes evaluating and selecting potential partners, negotiating and preparing agreements, i.e. license, collaborations, consortium/alliances, service contracts, non-disclosures, confidential, consortiums/alliances, material transfer, visiting scientists/students, etc.
Assistance Programs –includes working in programs that offer business, technical and/or financial assistance, such as the Industrial Research Assistance Program and the various granting councils.
New Company Creation –includes being involved in equity negotiations, coaching by external third party, business accelerator tools, market validation, technology validation, pre-seed and seed financing (angels, venture capitalists, provincial and federal monies including IRAP), establishment of proof of concept to building prototype and alpha prototype development, risk assessments, executive team search, appointment of advisory board, etc.
Technology Incubators –includes being involved in activities related to the strategic and business planning or/and operations of a technology incubator.
Tech Transfer/IP Tools –includes developing tools that assist technology transfer/IP professionals to work more effectively, such as business opportunity/expertise databases, evaluation tools, tracking systems, financial systems, etc.
Training and Development –includes hosting and/or developing workshops, seminars and info sessions on the different aspects of technology transfer and IPR.
Mentoring and Coaching –includes mentoring and coaching individuals involved in activities relating to technology transfer and intellectual property.
